Even the ones who can travel through its portals to different times and places (Alternates) don’t understand it fully, and it seems to have a will of its own. But the characters are interesting and eccentric enough that it’s fun to watch them (try to) figure it out! I don’t want to give spoilers, but the ending is bittersweet, giving some resolution but at great cost to one of the characters. The book does a great job of mixing intelligence , subtlety, and humor, and is well worth the read!
